A Celebration of Hats for Saint Catherine's Day

Join us for a day of celebration on Saint Catherine's Day, the 25th November for free talks, demonstrations and activities suitable for all ages and those new to and experienced with hats. The event will be hosted by members of Vendredi Millinery Group, whose exhibition 'A Hat or a Husband?' in the Marble Gallery showcases newly made and historic hats to celebrate the Patron Saint of Milliners, Saint Catherine.

Join Ruth Doyle from Vendredi Millinery Group for a talk on 'A Brief Introduction to Millinery' in the Akroyd Library at 12pm and again at 2pm.

Explore the history of millinery, local hat makers, hat making skills and tools and hear about Saint Catherine and the 'Catherinettes' traditions. The day will feature a pop-up-shop with hats for sale, milliners at work showcasing elements of hat making including blocking and steaming, and drop in activities and hat trying on for children, plus tea and cake available to buy.

At 1pm there will be a ceremonial cutting of the cake by The Mayor and Mayoress of Calderdale, Councillor Ferman Ali and Mrs Shaheen Ali.

All events and talks are free, no need to book.
