Vintage Sewing Machines: Restoration and Repair

This event takes place at Bankfield Museum

This full-day workshop is dedicated to maintaining and restoring the beauty and mechanics of vintage sewing machines - the true iron workhorses of the past, built before plastic ever entered the scene.

Whether you're an absolute beginner or a seasoned enthusiast, this session will take you deep into the world of antique sewing technology, from early transverse shuttles to smooth-running rotary hooks. The morning session will cover everything you need to confidently clean, maintain, and operate these timeless machines - no prior experience needed.

After a lunch break, we’ll dive into a live restoration of a vintage machine, walking you through every nut, bolt, and belt - from rust removal to mechanical revival. Learn what it takes to bring these machines back to life and keep them sewing for another century.

Spaces are limited - book your ticket now and bring history back to life, one stitch at a time.

Hot drinks and water are included and will be available throughout the day, but we ask that you bring a packed lunch with you.

Suitable for teenagers and adults. Under 18s must be accompanied by another paying participant over the age of 18.

Please note this event will be held in our Education Room, which is located on the first floor of the Museum. Please contact museum.learning@calderdale.gov.uk to discuss any access needs.
